Proper Dryer Maintenance

As a dryer is an expensive major appliance, it is important to know how to take care of it, in order to keep it running efficiently for many years. Replacing a dryer is not a whole of fun, and it usually entails buying a new washing machine as well. There are a few simple things you can do to keep major appliances such as your dryer working without problems year after year. You must be careful what you put in the dryer, keep the lint trap clean, and keep the airflow passages such as the dryer vent from obstruction. If you do all of these things, nothing other than a faulty part or a power outage will keep your dryer from working the way it needs to.

First and foremost it is a bad idea to put the following objects in a dryer: Firearms, Pets, Children, or anything flammable. A dryer is designed to dry fabric, so unless your dog is made of cotton, he will not find the dryer to be a fun experience, and you really do not want to have to clean up dog sick from the inside of your dryer. If you haven’t checked all of the pockets of your clothing before you wash them, then it is very important to do so before you dry them. A book of matches in a dryer is a recipe for disaster, so make sure you are very careful about what goes into your dryer dryer repair pasadena.

With any major appliance that involves heat, it is very important that you do not neglect keeping it clean. In the case of a dryer, it is very important to make sure that the lint trap is cleaned after every use. Too much lint in the lint trap, can cause a fire. Burning down your house is probably not on the list of top ten things you would like to experience. Make sure that the trap and the area around the trap are clean, and you should not have to stand guard by dryer while it works with a fire extinguisher. You probably do not want to have to replace clothes that have been charred either.

The dryer vent is also a place where potential problems can occur. This area behind the dryer that releases the warm air outdoors, needs to be cleaned occasionally. Letting lint, dryer sheets, and miscellaneous other forms of dryer waste build up in there is definitely a fire hazard. You can clean it by moving your dryer away from the wall, detaching the vent, and cleaning it out. It is not complicated, and it can really save you some money if you do it often enough. A dirty or clogged dryer vent, also effects the efficiency of the dryer, so making sure it is clean is a great way to get the most out of your dryer.

Every major appliance is an investment in the comfort and cleanliness of your family. It is really important to make sure you take care of the machine so that it functions to the best of its ability. In these economic times, money is tight. A great way to keep from spending extra money, is by taking care of the appliances that you already have in your home instead of replacing them because of improper maintenance. Keep an eye on what goes in the dryer, make sure you clean the lint trap, and once every few months, make sure that dryer vent is clear of any obstructions.

Understanding Fridge Repair

A refrigerator is one of the few appliances in your home that runs around the clock for 365 days a year. It is very rarely switched off otherwise your milk will most likely taste sour in the morning. Therefore it is quite remarkable that they are able to work for such periods of time without breaking down constantly.

That said, it can be a repair that is very expensive if your fridge does break down. Not only will you be faced with a huge bill by the engineers who repair your fridge, but you may have to replace all that lost food that had to be thrown away whirlpool refrigerator repair los angeles.

Refrigerator gasket

A refrigerator gasket is the seal that surrounds the door of your fridge. It prevents any cool air generated by the fridge escaping. This prevents a drop in temperature inside your fridge, but also doesn’t waste energy as the fridge tries extra hard to keep a constant temperature.

You can cut the length required after buying a one size fits all gasket. Simply unclip or unscrew the old gasket and carefully remove. Place the new gasket at the top of the door and work down the sides so its in position around the door. Make sure the gasket lies flat with no bumps or creases before screwing or clipping the gasket in place.

Servicing internal components

A thermostat control controls how cool the temperature is inside your fridge. To replace should it become faulty, switch off your fridge at the power source. Remove the thermostat by unscrewing it from its position and disconnect the wires.

To insert a new thermostat, simply reverse the instruction by connecting the wires at the back of the thermostat and screw back into position inside your fridge.

Temperature control can sometimes mean that a faulty thermostat isn’t the problem. It tends to be because of a blocked fan if the fridge is warm.

An evaporator fan runs to ensure the entire fridge is cool by circulating the air. A bent or broken blade may be the cause. If the blades are bent try to bend them back with a pair of pliers after the fridge has been switched off and the fan stops spinning. If there is a jam for the fan, be sure to switch the fridge off before trying to free it. Should any of the problems still persist after, call a professional service person who will be more qualified to tackle the problem.

By using certain appliances and items in the home we can make sure our bills don’t continue spiralling out of control but begin to fall as we take a more responsible approach to our energy usage.

The other main factor is the recent government advice to reduce the damage our homes have on the environment. Carbon footprints have become everyday terms we are all familiar with thanks to plenty of TV and print adverts encouraging us to turn our lights off when not needed and washing clothes on a lower temperature lg appliance repair pasadena.

Sometimes home appliances can be tough to save energy on as over time they may require servicing such as a tumble dryer not getting clothes dried as quickly as it used to. You will likely know whether they have good customer service. If the company has a website, you should be able to find out their availability easily. Finding an appliance company that is trustworthy is also important. Your home is your property. You will want to make sure that the technicians coming into your home are safe and reliable. They should leave your home in better condition than how they found it. Cost is another consideration. Just make sure they are within your budget and that they offer financing if you need it.

Getting the Most Out of Your Pressure Washer

The pressure washer is a multi-faceted tool which can be used in a wide variety of ways. From cleaning the siding on your house to washing your boat to things that we haven’t even thought of yet. So many conventional and unconventional uses!

What would take an individual many hours of serious scrubbing kenmore washer repair altadena, a pressure washer can accomplish in a matter of minutes. For instance, the stains, mold, mildew and sometimes algae that accumulate on the siding of a house whether it is vinyl, aluminum, or other over the years can really dull the overall look of the structure, and make it look “aged. ” The prospect of filling a bucket with water and detergent, grabbing a ladder, and beginning the task of applying lots of elbow grease in order to clean your siding can be somewhat daunting, and is not necessarily something that many folks look forward to on a weekend or an off day.

Enter the pressure washer, which is worth its weight in gold for the time saved alone. A pressure washer will take the relatively low-pressure water flow from a regular garden hose and boost the pressure up, using a pump powered by a gasoline engine, or sometimes an electric motor. The stream can be concentrated, or adjusted to a wider spray. Test the surface to be washed with various spray settings until you find the one that works best, and then apply the spray evenly to the surface.

This is important: if you are using a concentrated “jet” stream setting, NEVER linger over a surface that can possibly be eroded (brick, mortar, cement, etc.) for more than a second or two. The powerful flow of water from a good pressure washer can actually shred and seriously damage concrete and other similar substances. So be extremely cautious. Also, and this is more common sense than anything;never point a concentrated stream at yourself or anyone else. If it can damage concrete, need more be said?

It is also essential to thoroughly read the instruction manual that comes with your pressure washer in order to not only make sure that it is being operated properly, but to make sure you are using it in the safest possible manner. You don’t want to be unnecessarily hauling your unit to the pressure washer repair facility or power tool repair shop! Also, always wear a pair of safety goggles when operating a pressure washer! Protect yourself from the flying debris that comes with most pressure washing jobs.

Again, the pressure of your spray stream will need to be adjusted according to the job. From a high-pressure “jet” stream for getting in between the cracks on driveways and sidewalks, to a light spray for the application of soap or detergent and everything in between. The pressure washer simplifies the task of washing your boat or car, washing a fence or deck, cleaning gutters or patio furniture. The potential uses are endless for this time and energy-saving piece of equipment!

Top Load Washer – Cycles of Operation

A typical wash cycle of a typical agitator-type washing machine begins with a fill period of anywhere from 2 to 5 min. depending on the water level selected and the water pressure. Maytag, Whirlpool, Kenmore (Sears), Frigidaire, and GE may have minor capacity differences and thus time differences. The washing period, which will be for anywhere from 2 to 12 minutes, also depends on the setting the operator has selected. After the wash cycle is completed, the machine pauses for 1 min for the purpose of reversing motor rotation. After the 1-min pause, water is pumped from the spin basket and the outer tub. The spin basket does not spin during this operation, although, if there is no clothing or very little clothing in the spin basket, there is a tendency for it to move slightly. The washer agitator may also move very slightly, and this must not be mistaken for a fault in the washer. The motion of both the basket and the agitator will not occur in cases where there is a least a minimum amount of clothing in the basket maytag washer repair pasadena.

The following is the general cycle of operation, with the approximate time used in the various states:

Wash fill – 3 to 4 minutes
Wash – 1 to 15 minutes
Spin – 2 to 3 minutes
Rinse Fill 3 to 4 minutes
Rinses 2 to 3 minutes
Spin Dry 3 to 5 minutes
Total Time 14 to 34 minutes

This is not exact cycle and like I said above, there are minor differences between such brands as Whirlpool, Kenmore (Sears), Maytag, GE, and others. The time for one complete cycle may range from as little as 14 minutes to as long as 34 min, depending on the particular machine and length of the washer period which the user selects.

During the washer pump out period, water enters the spin basket and removes all suds from the outer tub as well as the spin basket and clothes load. By the end of the pump out period, all water has been removed from the spin basket and the outer tub. After the pump out period, the spin basket spins under power for a period of Ā¼ minute. After this time, power to the motor is turned off, and the basket is free to coast. The spin basket coasts through the next 2 min. during which time rinse water enters the washer basket and pump still operates.

The initial power spin and the subsequent coasting of the spin basket, together with the spin-spray water entering the clothes, have a tendency to wash any lighter-than-water soil from the fabric and flush it away from the clothing. The washer spin basket is operating only at slow speed at this time; therefore, the clothing is not packed so tightly that a scum or lighter-than-water soil will be trapped.

After the initial spin rinse, the normal extraction spin of our typical washer occurs for a period of 2 minutes, after which the spin basket wills with water for a period of not less than 2 minutes and not more than 4 min, depending upon the original setting of the water level switch. The difference between the initial fill and the rinse fill comes about through the fact that the clothes in the spin basket contain some water which is not found in the original load.

After our typical washer is filled with rinse water, there is a 4 min period of agitated deep-wave rinse. The 1 min pause and 2 min pump out periods are repeated, after which the spin basket operates for a total of 7 min to extract water from the clothes. After the first 3/4 min, a1 /4 min spin spray occurs for an additional fresh-water rinsing. Please understand the cycle of operations, because if washers pause for 1 min and you do not realize the reason for it, you may have already have called the service technician before the machine starts again. The cycle times of various operations of the washers are given in the service manuals.

Please use this as a basic guide to understand the basic operating principles of the top-load automatic washing machine. Once again, there are slight variations between Maytag, Whirlpool, and Kenmore (Sears), so special considerations may be necessary.

Appliances – Dryer Operation

Automatic clothes dryers consist of a motor driven revolving basket, an electric heating element or gas flame, thermostats, and a timer. Some models also have a selector switch. Air, heated by the electric element or gas flame, is forced through the tumbling clothes by a fan. The fan is driven by the drive motor. The temperature of the heated air, entering and leaving the basket, is controlled by thermostats which maintain a balance between the air velocity, air volume, and air temperature. The temperature of the exhaust air is a measure of the dryness of the clothes.

After the dryer is started and loaded with damp articles ge dryer repair pasadena, the temperature inside the basket will rise rapidly. When the temperature reaches approximately 130F, the evaporation of the moisture in the load will absorb the heat as rapidly as the heat is generated by the heater. The temperature will not rise appreciably above 130F until the load is nearly dry.

When the load is nearly dry, there will not be enough moisture in the clothes to absorb the heat, and the basket and clothing temperatures will rise. This heat rise will continue until the discharge air reaches approximately 160F. At this point the heater circuit is disconnected by a thermostat. The dryer basket will continue to revolve in what is called the overrun period, and cool, fresh air will enter the basket to cool the clothes for handling. The overrun time may last from 3 to 10 min and is controlled by either the timer or an overrun thermostat which will stop the dryer.

Modern dryers of today, Maytag, Kenmore, GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, have a moisture sensor which relays moisture conditions inside the dryer to a control board which controls the cycle time and cool-down modes. The moisture sensor consists of two conductive metallic wires located inside the dryer and mounted to the plastic lint filter housing. One wire has a very low-current AC voltage applied to it and the other one is grounded. When moisture is present a conduction path exists intermittently between the two wires. When the clothes are dry, there is no conduction path. When the dryer is in the automatic dry cycle, the control board will then advance to the cool-down mode.

The 400% Dryer – The Best Way To Waste Money And Time

Even after being around and involved in appliance repair for over thirty years, I still have the occasional Never Seen Anything Like IT moments. I had one today as a matter of fact. I received a call about a dryer that wasn’t functioning correctly. The client said that the dryer had never worked properly and that it was getting even worse. It was one of the expensive LG front load dryers that was supposed to be top of the line and energy efficient.

The address they gave was in a very posh section of town, I arrived to a gorgeous two story colonial and the lady of the house ushered me to the laundry room and right away I could see at least part of the problem. The laundry room had been placed in the center of the house in a little closet and for the vented air from the dryer to make it to the exterior it had to go through at least twenty feet of duct lg dryer repair pasadena.

The next tell tale sign was that the dryer was jammed up tight against the wall. Upon looking it over I realized whoever installed it had done so because they had to in order for the electrical breaker box door to open. My first order of business in a situation like this is to go check where the dryer vents outside to see how much air is flowing out. It doesn’t matter how much a dryer costs or how hot it gets, the main ingredient is having a sufficient volume of air flowing through the machine and moving the moisture that the heat removes from the clothes outside.

The first thing I noticed about the exterior dryer vent was that it was closed. In fact it had never been open, it was one of those that has flaps that the air pushes open and then they close when you are finished drying to keep bugs and critters from exploring your dryer vent. On closer inspection I discovered that when the house had been originally painted about four years hence, they had painted the cover and then the paint had hardened in place and glued the dryer vent shut, the same as paint will often cause a window to stick and not open.

However when I cleaned the paint off and got the flaps opening and closing properly again, there was still no air flowing out. I checked where the dryer was vented into the wall and discover that when the dryer was originally shoved against the wall, the vent hose had been smashed closed, completely shutting off the flow of air to the outside. It was so bad that there was a big U shape in the duct which was filled with this awful sludge of water and lint at the bottom, the worst clog I have ever seen.

The solution was to run a flexible vent hose and to not push the dryer right up next to the wall. Once I did that, I started getting good airflow on the outside at which point I knew the problem was solved. As I was wrapping up and chatting with the client, she told me that they had routinely been running a load of clothes four times through the dryer to get it dry. So they were using four times as much power to dry the clothes as they needed to. Ouch!

The part they didn’t realize was that all that heat which should have been being vented outside was actually being retained in the house and then the air conditioner was having to remove all that heat from the house, I can’t imagine how much more that was tacking onto the power bill as well.

Increasing the Efficiency of Your Clothes Dryer

While many home appliances are included in the Energy Star program, which is a program funded by the government to help protect the environment by allowing people to return their old appliances to get new ones, sadly the clothes dryer is not an Energy Star candidate. The reason is that it consumes way too much electricity to qualify. So while many washing machines are Energy Start compliant, the clothes dryers are not whirlpool dryer repair pasadena.

However this doesn’t mean that you cannot improve the efficiency of your dryer at home to consume less electricity. Here are a few things you can do to improve the workings of your clothes dryer:

Avoid overloading your dryer with clothes but also avoid having it only partially loaded.
Try to use dryers with shorter vent hoses. If they are too long, it will take that much longer for the machine to dry your clothes.
Make a habit of running twice your clothes through the spin cycle. This will allow the unit to work better as it is known that too much moisture will take longer for the dryer to dry your clothes.
Clean your vents properly, both from inside and from the outside duct. Before each use, clean the lint screen. Proper cleaning avoids fire hazards which are so commonly occurring with too much lint that escaped the lint traps.
When you buy a new clothes dryer, even though not Energy Star compliant, you can still find energy saving pieces. What you need to do is look for the EnerGuide rating on the machine. If it has a rating of 898KWh/ year, it’s right now pretty much the most efficient one that you can get. On the other spectrum is the 950KWh per year, which right now is the lowest efficient.
Buy a unit that is automatic, meaning that it shuts off right away after the clothes are dry.
If you have less space in the room, buying one that is compact size will save you not only space but also energy, since this size usually uses less energy than a regular size one.
