Clarice Cliff 1899-1972

Staffordshire born designer, joined A. J. Wilkinsons as an apprentice in 1916. In 1927 she and a small team of paintresses decorated a stock of old whiteware with bold geometric patterns. Marketed as 'Bizarre Ware by Clarice Cliff', this was highly successful and she went on to design vivid floral patterned and stylised landscapes throughout the Thirties. Clarice Cliff is probably the most famous of all Art Deco ceramic designers and her wares are extremely collectable today. In her heyday in the 1920's/30's she was known as the Sunshine Girl, and looking at her beautiful bright, bold designs today, one can easily see why! Her wares have a crisp modern look even today in the 21st Century, and the effect they must have had when first produced, can now only be guessed at.
