Sad News : Eva Hewitt April 4th 1923 - February 24th 2010

PLEASE NOTE : I am currently not trading for the forseeable future for reasons which will become clear as you scroll down the page.

After a hard fought battle against terminal cancer , on Wednesday 24th of February , my beloved Mother , Eva Hewitt passed away at home at just after 1 pm , surrounded by loved ones .

May God bless her , and keep her safe , please continue to pray for us or send your positive thoughts , we value your kind continuing support very much indeed.

April 4th would have been my Mum's 87th birthday , donations in her memory to the Marie Curie Nurses were requested at the time of her funeral.  Please remember these wonderful women and men , they helped my Mother tremendously throughout her battle with cancer.

Thank you in anticipation.

As ever , my partner jolly Roger continues to be a wonderful support for me , as he has been for Mum during her illness.

Would friends who wish to keep in touch please email me at muirhewitt@hotmail.com  as I have no trading address.

What is Art Deco?
A style that stretches from New York to Morecambe!

What is Art Deco ?

I foolishly take it for granted , that everybody who accesses this website , knows what Art Deco is but , of course , that is not neccessarily the truth !!

Many visitors to Redbrick often ask me what it is.

Art Deco takes it's name from the famous 1925 exhibition of 1920's Decorative Arts from all over the world held in Paris :L'Exposition De Les Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels .

Bevis Hillier the influential British author and Art critic (also the author of an important two volume biography of British Poet Laureate John Betjeman) first coined the term Art Deco shortened from the exhibition Arts Decoratifs and thus defined the style in his famous and well illustrated Studio Vista paperback book simply titled Art Deco , and first published in 1968.

It is high time that this important book was republished - it was last reprinted by Herbert Black about ten years ago.

Art Deco was an International style which encompassed everything from architecture ( from the Chrysler Building in New York to the Midland Hotel in Morecambe ! ) through furniture , ceramics , glassware and jewellery to tiny details such as door handles.

It's interesting when visiting cities throughout the world to discover examples of it's distinctive style everywhere from Morecambe to Miami!

Art Deco follows on from the earlier Fin De Siecle style known as Art Nouveau named after a Gallery in Paris owned by a Samuel Bing in Germany this style was known as Jugendstil .

Just a reminder : Redbrick is open seven days a week , and on this and every Thursday we are open until 8.00 pm !!

I just realised that I hadn't updated anything on the website for ages not since before Christmas in fact! Having left my camera at Roger's home at the weekend , I need to retrieve it before I can add any more images! Several famous deaths have happened since I last added anything including Patrick McGoohan of TV's The Prisoner fame , and another face from TV , artist Tony Hart from Vision On!

Happy New Year
Tansu , 2nd Floor , Redbrick Mill

Happy New Year Folks!!   Hope your seasonal celebrations went well?   We had an enjoyable time on Christmas Day ,but ,  as Redbrick Mill is open almost 24/7 (!!) , we were back on Boxing Day.

The legendary singing star Eartha Kitt died at the age of 81 over Christmas , she had been around in my life since I was about 4 years old , when we had a 78 rpm record of her singing "I'm Just An Old Fashioned Girl!" so I was sad to read of  her passing in the online BBC News Alerts bulletin!

Tonight as ever we are open until 8.00 pm !

Tuesday December 30th

Two mentors from my youth!

In the last fourteen days I've lost two mentors from my young life!

Oliver Postgate creator of such splendid Children's BBC series as  Noggin The Nog The Clangers , and of course Bagpuss died last week, at the age of 83, and his contribution to Children's TV will be greatly missed.

During the previous week from America, I heard of the death at age 92 of the great Forrest J Ackerman the creator of the Monster Film Magazine Famous Monsters Of Filmland .He had a marvellous collection of Horror Movie Memorabilia , including Bela Lugosi's original Dracula cape!

It's amazing how long my interest has remained , I still love the Noggin series , and I have bought this series on DVD.

To my delight I have also managed to pick up several of the old Famous Monsters Of Filmland magazines too!

Tansu Oriental Antiques and a whole lot more!

After a very Wintry first week of December we know Christmas is almost here and goodness how the year seems to have flown by!

I'm settling into my new home in Tansu and am being made to feel very welcome by  Tansu's owners Chris and Steven , and by my new colleagues Suzy and Simon.

All I need now is some signage outside Tansu so people know where I am!  I look forward to welcoming customers old and new to my new home in Redbrick !!

Art Deco Originals first day in Tansu !

Today is my first day within Tansu the Oriental Antiques Emporium on the 2nd Floor in Redbrick Mill .   See their website for further details of the kind of stock they offer www.tansu.co.uk

The Art Deco furniture sits nicely alongside the Oriental pieces , and this fact gives any customers who are seeking inspiration , fresh ideas of an eclectic mix of differing styles , in other words you don't need to stick with just one era , or one style in your home!

21 st of November 2008
Upstairs/Downstairs Moving to Tansu

Upstairs Downstairs !!! The move downstairs to Tansu is still a work in progress so half of  the stock of Art Deco Originals is upstairs ( on the 3rd floor of Redbrick )and half downstairs in Tansu!!  Oh Mrs Bridges where are you when we need you?

Mickey Mouse is 8o today!
Art Deco Icon Celebrates 80th Birthday!

As I was driving to Redbrick Mill today , I switched on The Today Programme , on Radio 4 , and was delighted to hear my friend Brian Sibley the BBC broadcaster talkng about Mickey Mouse whose official 80th Birthday is being celebrated today.   It's twenty years since I went to the Walt Disney Studios and to Disneyland with Brian to celebrate the 6oth Birthday of The Mouse

This was truly a marvellous once in a lifetime experience , and I'll be for ever grateful to Brian for his kindness in inviting me to join him as his guest on a magical trip , which afforded me a glimpse of some Behind The Scenes Disney Treasures.   I was able to view at my leisure the original Storyboard Sketches from my favourite Disney animated movie  Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs , and to see the splendid Disney Animation Archives , something as a non Disney employee , I would never have had access to.

I was also able to meet veteran Disney Animators Jo Grant , Marc Davis, Ward Kimball, which was a great experience.

I also met Walt Disney's nephew Roy Disney , and famous Sci Fi author Ray Bradbury , and last but by no means least the delightfully quirky Adriana Caselotti the Voice of Snow White herself!

8 th November 2008
A momentous week in World and personal affairs!

Well what a momentous week in world history Barack Obama was elected as the first black President of the United States Of America - great news!  Sadly on the same day November 5th it was the 20th Anniversary of the death of my Father Geoffrey Hewitt , it seems incredible to me to think that it is twenty years since he died , how quickly the years pass!

Animation Art Archive

As a big animation fan I was pleased to discovera great website ( nothing to do with Art Deco except some of the animated features/shorts were produced during the 1920's/1930's ) so click and enjoy!

Thankfully her daughter my Mother is still going strong at the age of 85 , many of my customers will know her , from the days of looking after my shop at Halifax Antiques Centre , though she only occasionally ventures to Redbrick.

Hooray for the Guardian Interiors Supplement of last weekend!      It has certainly done it's work , as we had several new visitors as a direct result , two of whom made substantial first time purchases!

Since I moved to Redbrick I have had lots of visitors from Halifax Antiques Centre days -  both customers and former colleagues, and it has been very good to see people again, in some cases after a long absence - Redbrick certainly gets a really great footfall!
